Xiphias was named by Linnaeus (1758) [Sepkoski's age data: T Ol-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 718,915]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Squalidae by Leidy (1860); to Xiphiidae by Sauvage (1870), Schultz (1987), Purdy et al. (2001); to Perciformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Xiphiinae by Fierstine (2006).
