Amphistium was named by Agassiz (1834) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-m-l Sepkoski's reference number: 746,771]. It is the type genus of Amphistiidae.
It was assigned to Scomberoidei by Agassiz (1835); to Pleuronectiformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Amphistiidae by Carnevale et al. (2014), Bannikov (2014), van der Laan (2019).
