Atheresthes was named by Jordan and Gilbert (1881) [Sepkoski's age data: T Plio R Sepkoski's reference number: 560]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Pleuronectiformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Pleuronectidae by Fierstine et al. (2012), Welton (2015).
