Microchirus was named by Bonaparte (1833) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-m R Sepkoski's reference number: 915]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Pleuronectiformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Soleidae by Arambourg (1925), Arambourg (1927), Girone et al. (2006).
