Cheiloceras pompeckji was named by Wedekind (1918). It is the type species of Puncticeras.
It was synonymized subjectively with Cheiloceras (Staffites) ovatum by Petersen (1975); it was recombined as Cheiloceras (Puncticeras) pompeckji by Becker (1993); it was recombined as Puncticeras pompeckji by Korn and Klug (2002).
