Taxonomy
Melanopelta antiqua was named by Shishkin (1967). Its type specimen is PIN 1584/7, a set of postcrania (Fragment of interclavicle), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Yarenga River, PIN 1584, which is in an Olenekian terrestrial horizon in the Yarenskian Formation of the Russian Federation.
