Taxonomy
Diodon was named by Linnaeus (1758) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 915]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Diodontoidea.
It was assigned to Gymnodontes by Agassiz (1835); to Gymnodontidae by Eastman (1904), Chapman and Cudmore (1924) and Leriche (1942); to Tetradontiformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Diodontidae by Hay (1902), Casier (1958), Deraniyagala (1968), Thurmond and Jones (1981), Kumar and Loyal (1987), Vicens and Rodríguez-Perea (2003) and Matsuura (2015).
