Plectocretacicus was named by Sorbini (1979) [Sepkoski's age data: K Ceno-l Sepkoski's reference number: 915]. It is not extant. It is the type genus of Plectocretacicidae.
It was assigned to Tetraodontiformes by Patterson (1993); to Tetradontiformes by Sepkoski (2002); and to Plectocretacicidae by Tyler and Sorbini (1996), van der Laan (2019).
