Opetiosaurus was named by Kornhuber (1902) [Sepkoski's age data: K Turo Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Squamata by Sepkoski (2002); and to Aigialosauridae by McDowell and Bogert (1954), Bell and Polcyn (2005).
