Pontosaurus was named by Kramberger (1892). Its type is Hydrosaurus lesinensis.
It was assigned to Squamata by Sepkoski (2002); to Dolichosauridae by McDowell and Bogert (1954), Carroll (1988) and Pierce and Caldwell (2004); to Ophidiomorpha by Palci and Caldwell (2010); and to Dolichosauridae by Paparella et al. (2018).
