Phygosaurus was named by Arthaber (1924) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr Ladi-u Sepkoski's reference number: 746]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Lariosaurinae by Nopsca (1928); and to Notosauria by Sepkoski (2002).
