Libanechelys bultyncki was named by Taverne (2004). Its type specimen is IRSNB P. 6933, a skeleton, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Hadjoula (IRSNB collection), which is in a Cenomanian lagoonal/restricted shallow subtidal lime mudstone in the Sannine Limestone Formation of Lebanon. It is the type species of Libanechelys.
