Kimmerosaurus was named by Brown (1981) [Sepkoski's age data: J Tith-l].
It was assigned to Plesiosauria by Sepkoski (2002); to Cimoliasauridae by O'Keefe (2001), O'Keefe (2004), O'Keefe (2004) and O'Keefe (2004); to Cryptocleidoidea by Otero et al. (2012); and to Cryptoclididae by Brown (1981), Brown et al. (1986), Carroll (1988), Gasparini et al. (2002), Ketchum and Benson (2010) and Benson and Druckenmiller (2014).
