Taxonomy
Homeosauridae was named by Gervais (1852). It is extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Sphenodontidae by Cocude-Michel (1963); it was reranked as the subfamily Homeosaurinae by Kuhn (1966); it was misspelled as Homoesauridae by Osborn (1903); it was corrected as Homoeosauridae by Boulenger (1893), Jaekel (1910), Kuhn (1946) and Herrera-Flores et al. (2018).

It was assigned to Rhynchocephalia by Boulenger (1893); to Rhynchocephalia by Osborn (1903); to Homoeosauri by Jaekel (1910); to Sphenodontina by Kuhn (1946); to Sphenodontidae by Kuhn (1966); and to Neosphenodontia by Herrera-Flores et al. (2018).
