Taxonomy
Californosaurus was named by Kuhn (1934) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr u]. It is not extant. It was considered monophyletic by Motani (1999).
It was assigned to Cymbospondylidae by Kuhn (1971); to Merriamosauria by Maisch and Matzke (2000); to Ichthyosauria by Kuhn (1964) and Sepkoski (2002); to Californosauridae by von Huene (1951), McGowan and Motani (2003) and Maisch (2010); and to Euichthyosauria by Motani (1999) and Ji et al. (2016).
