Taxonomy
Platypterygius was named by von Huene (1922) [Sepkoski's age data: K (Nc) - K (Ceno-l)]. It is not extant. Its type is Ichthyosaurus platydactylus.
It was assigned to Streptospondylidae by von Huene (1951); to Stenopterygiidae by Shimada (1996); to Leptopterygiidae by Carroll (1988), Arkhangelsky (1998), Storrs et al.
