Protoichthyosaurus was named by Appleby (1979) [Sepkoski's age data: J Hett-l]. It is the type genus of Protoichthyosauridae.
It was synonymized subjectively with Ichthyosaurus by Maisch and Matzke (2000).
It was assigned to Protoichthyosauridae by Appleby (1979), Carroll (1988); to Ichthyosauria by Sepkoski (2002); and to Ichthyosauridae by Lomax et al. (2017).
