Palaeopleurosaurus was named by Carroll (1985) [Sepkoski's age data: J Toar-l Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. Its type is Palaeopleurosaurus posidoniae.
It was assigned to Spheodontia by Sepkoski (2002); to Rhynchocephalia by Rauhut et al. (2012); to Sphenodontidae by Reynoso (2000), Apesteguía and Novas (2003), Apesteguia et al. (2012); and to Pleurosauridae by Carroll (1988), Klein and Scheyer (2017), Herrera-Flores et al. (2018).
