Taxonomy
Platecarpus tuberosus was named by Cope (1872). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Columbus, which is in a Santonian/Campanian marine sandstone in the Eutaw Formation of Mississippi. It is the type species of Neptunochelys.
It was recombined as Neptunochelys tuberosa by Wieland (1900), Hay (1902), Hay (1908) and Hay (1930).
