Taxonomy

Hyposaurus was named by Owen (1849) [Sepkoski's age data: K Maes Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. It is not extant.

It was assigned to Teleosauridae by Cope (1885); to Goniopholidae by Hay (1902); to Hyposaurinae by Nopcsa (1928); to Pholidosauridae by Hay (1930); to Crocodilia by Sepkoski (2002); to Neosuchia by Nascimento and Zaher (2011); to Dyrosauridae by Buffetaut (1979), Carroll (1988), Denton et al. (1997), Erickson (1998), Jouve et al. (2005), Jouve (2007), Hill et al. (2008), Jouve et al. (2008), Barbosa et al. (2008) and Bronzati et al. (2012); and to Hyposaurinae by Jouve et al. (2021).

H. derbianus (syn. Guarinisuchus munizi), H. natator (syn. H. natator oweni), H. nopcsai, H. wilsoni

Synonyms

Guarinisuchus was named by Barbosa et al. (2008).

It was synonymized subjectively with Hyposaurus by Jouve et al. (2021).

It was assigned to Dyrosauridae by Barbosa et al. (2008), Andrade et al. (2011) and Bronzati et al. (2012).
Wurnosaurus wilsoni was named by Swinton (1930). Its type specimen is NHM R5613, a mandible (Fragment of mandibular symphysis), and it is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Hyposaurus wilsoni by Buffetaut (1980); it was considered a nomen dubium by Jouve (2007).
Sokotosaurus nopcsai was named by Swinton (1930). Its type specimen is NHM R5607, a mandible (Fragment of mandibular symphysis), and it is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Hyposaurus nopcsai by Buffetaut (1980); it was considered a nomen dubium by Jouve (2007).
Sokotosaurus was named by Swinton (1930) [Sepkoski's age data: K Maes T Eo-l Sepkoski's reference number: 620,1066]. It is not extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Hyposaurus by Buffetaut (1980).

It was assigned to Crocodilia by Sepkoski (2002).
Wurnosaurus was named by Swinton (1930) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-l Sepkoski's reference number: 620]. It is not extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Hyposaurus by Buffetaut (1980).

It was assigned to Crocodilia by Sepkoski (2002).
