Mytilus (Modiolus) typicus was named by Forbes (1846).
It was recombined as Modiola typica by Riedel (1933); it was recombined as Modiolus typicus by Reyment (1955), Dartevelle and Freneix (1957) and Freneix and Odin (2001).
