Taxonomy
Scutella gibbsii was named by Rémond (1863).

It was recombined as Echinarachnius gibbsi by Merriam (1899); it was recombined as Echinarachinus gibbsii by Pack (1909); it was recombined as Dendraster gibbsii by Clark and Twitchell (1915), Kew (1920), Grant and Hertlein (1938) and Durham (1955).
