Taxonomy
Pentamerus knappi was named by Hall and Whitfield (1872). It is the type species of Rhipidium, Rhipidium (Rhipidium).

It was recombined as Rhipidium knappi by Bassett and Cocks (1974); it was recombined as Rhipidium (Rhipidium) knappi by Williams et al. (2002).
