Baphetes was named by Owen (1854).
It was assigned to Labyrinthodontes by Roemer (1856); to Labyrinthodontia by Owen (1859), Owen (1860), Owen (1861); to Dendrerpetontidae by Hay (1902); to Loxommatidae by Beaumont (1977), Carroll (1988); and to Baphetinae by Clack and Milner (2015).
