Taxonomy

Baphetes was named by Owen (1854).

It was assigned to Labyrinthodontes by Roemer (1856); to Labyrinthodontia by Owen (1859), Owen (1860), Owen (1861); to Dendrerpetontidae by Hay (1902); to Loxommatidae by Beaumont (1977), Carroll (1988); and to Baphetinae by Clack and Milner (2015).

B. kirkbyi (syn. B. latirostris), B. minor, B. orientalis, B. planiceps

Synonyms

Baphetes minor was named by Dawson (1870). Its type specimen is M.C.Z. 1053, a mandible, and it is a 3D body fossil.

It was considered a nomen dubium by Clack and Milner (2015).
