Dissorophus was named by Cope (1895). Its type is Dissorophus multicinctus. It is the type genus of Dissorophidae, Dissorophoidea, Dissorophinae.
It was assigned to Archegosauridae by Hay (1902); to Dissorophoidea by Yates and Warren (2000); to Dissorophidae by Williston (1910), Carroll (1988), Anderson et al. (2008); and to Dissorophinae by Watson (1919), Schoch (2013), Schoch and Milner (2014).
