Spinospongia was named by Rigby and Senowbari-Daryan (1996) [Sepkoski's age data: P u]. Its type is Spinospongia radiata.

It was assigned to Pharetronida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Spinospongiinae by Finks et al. (2004).
