Luzocephalus was named by Shishkin (1980). It is not extant. Its type is Luzocephalus blomi.
It was assigned to Lydekkerinidae by Warren and Black (1985), Carroll (1988), Shishkin et al. (1996), Shishkin et al. (2000), Schoch and Milner (2000); and to Trematosauria by Yates and Warren (2000).
