Stratispongia was named by Finks (1995) [Sepkoski's age data: P Sakm-u P Guad-u Sepkoski's reference number: 204]. Its type is Stratispongia cinctuta.

It was assigned to Pharetronida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Catenispongiidae by Finks (1995), Senowbari-Daryan and Rigby (2011).
