Gerrothorax was named by Nilsson (1934). It is not extant. It was considered monophyletic by Jenkins et al. (2008).
It was assigned to Plagiosauridae by Kuhn (1971), Carroll (1988), Schoch (2013); and to Plagiosaurinae by Jenkins et al. (2008), Schoch and Milner (2014).
