Stacheoceras pelagicum was named by Gemmellaro (1887). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Roccapalumba, Torto River, which is in a Wordian carbonate limestone in Italy.
It was recombined as Grioceras pelagicum by Leonova (2018).
