Bulbocanthus was named by Bryant (1932). Its type is Bulbocanthus rugosus. It is the type genus of Bulbocanthidae.

It was assigned to Ptyctodontidae by Bryant (1932); and to Bulbocanthidae by van der Laan (2019).
