Graptolithus falx was named by Suess (1851).

It was recombined as Spirograptus falx by Přibyl (1945); it was recombined as Monograptus falx by Zalasiewicz and Tunnicliffe (1994); it was recombined as Oktavites falx by Rickards et al. (2005).
