Prodesmodon was named by Estes (1964).

It was assigned to Desmognathinae by Estes (1964); to Prosirenidae by Estes (1969), Estes and Berberian (1970); and to Batrachosauroididae by Naylor (1979), Estes (1981), Carroll (1988), Bryant (1989), DeMar (2013).

Cuttysarkus was named by Estes (1964). Its type is Cuttysarkus mcnallyi.

It was synonymized subjectively with Prodesmodon by Naylor (1979).
