Cliefdenella was named by Webby (1969) [Sepkoski's age data: O Cara-l O Ashg-u Sepkoski's reference number: 652,941,1066]. It is the type genus of Cliefdenellidae.
It was assigned to Calcarea by Sepkoski (2002); and to Cliefdenellidae by Webby (1969), Rigby and Potter (1986), Rigby et al. (1988), Rigby et al. (2008), Senowbari-Daryan and Rigby (2015).
