Bolosaurus was named by Cope (1878). It is not extant. Its type is Bolosaurus striatus. It is the type genus of Bolosauridae.
It was assigned to Bolosauridae by Cope (1878), Hay (1902), Case (1907), Case (1911), Broom (1913), Hay (1930), Carroll (1988), Reisz et al. (2002); and to Bolosaurinae by Falconnet (2012).
