Heterocidaris wickensis was named by Wright (1861). Its type specimen is SM J6106 and is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Blea Wyke (Inferior Oolite Sands), which is in a Toarcian/Aalenian marine horizon in the United Kingdom.
