Stereosternum was named by Cope (1885).

It was synonymized subjectively with Mesosaurus by Lydekker (1889), Gürich (1889), Huene (1941), Karl et al. (2007).

It was assigned to Batrachia by Cope (1885); to Batrachia by Cope (1886); to Proganosauria by Baur (1887); to Proganosauria by Seeley (1892); and to Mesosauridae by Stromer (1914), Oelofsen and Araujo (1987), Carroll (1988), Rossmann (2000).
