Lopholatilus ereborensis

Taxonomy
Lopholatilus ereborensis was named by Carnevale and Godfrey (2014). Its type specimen is USNM 467782, a partial skeleton, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Stratford Bluffs, Zone 10-11, which is in a Langhian estuary/bay claystone in the Calvert Formation of Virginia.

Godfrey 2014A Lopholatilus species characterized by moder- ately deep head (maximum depth contained slightly less than two times in head length); short snout (snout length contained more than four times in head length); short ascending process of the premaxilla (length of the ascending process 34–36.5% of length of alveolar process); shortened horizontal arm of the preopercle (length of the horizontal arm of the preopercle 52.8– 66.4% of length of vertical arm); angle formed by vertical and horizontal arms of the preopercle measuring about 120; occipi- tal region of the neurocranium obliquely sloping; epioccipital spine extending posteriorly beyond the supraoccipital crest; villi- form teeth on dentary restricted to the symphyseal region; cen- trum of the second abdominal vertebra subrectangular, clearly longer than high.
