Taxonomy
Crocodilus antiquus was named by Leidy (1852). Its type specimen is ANSP 9188 and 9189, a partial skeleton (2 teeth, 2 vertebrae, a rib fragment, and an ungual phalanx), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Potomac River, Stratford Hall Plantation, which is in a Serravallian marine horizon in the Choptank Formation of Virginia.

It was recombined as Crocodylus antiquus by Leidy (1852), Hay (1902) and Hay (1930); it was recombined as Thecachampsa antiqua by Cope (1869), Myrick (2001), Jouve (2016) and Hastings and Dooley (2017); it was recombined as Thecachampsa antiquus by Weems (2018) and Rio and Mannion (2021).

Synonyms
  • Thecachampsa contusor was named by Cope (1867). Its type specimen is ANSP 9152, a tooth, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is James T. Thomas estate, which is in a Serravallian offshore shelf horizon in the Calvert Formation of Maryland.

    It was recombined as Crocodylus contusor by Hay (1930); it was synonymized subjectively with Thecachampsa antiqua by Myrick (2001); it was synonymized subjectively with Thecachampsa antiquus by Weems (2018).
