Taxonomy
Globulocystites rotundatus was named by Frest et al. (1979). Its type specimen is SUI 44438 and is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Rye Cove, Clinchport, which is in an Ashbyan transition zone/lower shoreface packstone/grainstone in the Benbolt Formation of Virginia. It is the type species of Globulocystites.

T. J. Frest et al. 1979Globulocystites with strongly inflated, nearly spherical theca with circular profile and broadly oval cross section. Arms unequal, right arm does not reach column; calluses narrow, not strongly protruded from theca. Thecal plating: P1-P9, A1-A6, paired A7, A8, and A9, R2-R5, L1-L3, three BB, variable number of intercalates (average seven) on right side. Ornament: coarse pustules on immature and most adult specimens, thin irregular ridges and pustules on gerontic individuals.
