Kenichthys campbelli was named by Chang and Zhu (1993) [Small osteolepidid with shortest snout and longest postorbital portion of ethmosphenoid shield among osteolepidids. Snout bent down anteriorly, nostrils and lachrymo-maxillary notch not visible from above. Nostril groove-like. Lachrymo-maxillary notch deep and angular. Suture between premaxillae and adjacent bones always present. Premaxilla not canal-bearing. Preorbital corners acute. Postorbital corner pronounced, formed by posterior supraorbital, with deep embayment behind. Pineal foramen at level of postorbital comers. Long anterior pitlines positioned far behind pineal foramen and far from each other. Squamosal, quadratojugal and preopercular fused into compound plate with pits followed by grooves at its anterodorsal, and at bend of sensory canal near posterodorsal, and pit without groove at posterior margin. Bend of squamosal pit-line behind row of pores of jugal sensory canal. Lower jaw short and high with coronoid and other teeth covered with fine longitudinal striations. Its type specimen is IVPP V10493.1, a partial skull (an almost complete ethmosphenoid shield with the premaxillae and small part of the right anterolateral corner of the snout missing). Its type locality is Kenichthys-type locality, which is in an Eifelian marine horizon in the Shangshuanghe Formation of China.
