Tchoiria was named by Efimov (1975). Its type is Tchoiria namsarai.
It was assigned to Champsosauridae by Efimov (1975), Carroll (1988), Evans (1990), Evans (1991), Efimov and Storrs (2000); to Simoedosauridae by Gao and Fox (2005), Ksepka et al. (2005); to Neochoristodera by Matsumoto et al. (2007), Matsumoto and Evans (2010), Matsumoto et al. (2013), Matsumoto et al. (2019); and to Neochoristodera by Dong et al. (2020).
