Cyphosoma mortoni was named by de Loriol (1887). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is USGS Mesozoic 16242, Wahalak, which is in a Maastrichtian carbonate chalk in Mississippi.
It was recombined as Coptosoma mortoni by Clark and Twitchell (1915); it was recombined as Rachiosoma mortoni by Cooke (1953).
