Hovasaurus was named by Piveteau (1926). Its type is Hovasaurus boulei.
It was assigned to Tangasaurinae by Currie (1981), Currie (1982) and Benton (1985); and to Tangasauridae by Kuhn (1966) and Carroll (1988).
