Climacograptus typicalis spiniferus was named by Ruedemann (1908).
It was recombined as Climacograptus spiniferus by Ruedemann (1912), Ruedemann (1947), Riva (1974), Vandenberg (1990); it was recombined as Climacograptus (Diplacanthograptus) spiniferus by Mitchell (1987); it was recombined as Diplacanthograptus spiniferus by Goldman and Wright (2003).
