Meniscognathus was named by Estes (1964). Its type is Meniscognathus altmani.
It was assigned to Teiini by Estes (1983); to Chamopsiinae by Denton and O'Neill (1995); to Teiidae by Estes (1964), Carroll (1988), Gao and Fox (1991), Gao and Fox (1996); to Scincomorpha by Nydam and Voci (2007); and to Chamopsiidae by Nydam et al. (2010), Longrich et al. (2012).
