Oligodontosaurus was named by Gilmore (1942). Its type is Oligodontosaurus wyomingensis.
It was assigned to Sauria by Gilmore (1942); to Amphisbaenidae by Estes (1976); and to Oligodontosauridae by Estes (1983), Carroll (1988) and Longrich et al. (2015).
