Lestophis was named by Marsh (1885). It is not extant. Its type is Limnophis crassus.

It was assigned to Boidae by Hay (1902), Hay (1930); to Rhineurinae by Hecht (1959); and to Rhineuridae by Estes (1983), Carroll (1988).
