Anniella was named by Gray (1852). It is extant. It is the type genus of Anniellidae, Anniellinae.

It was assigned to Aniellidae by Cope (1875); to Anniellidae by McDowell and Bogert (1954); to Anniellinae by Estes (1983); and to Anguidae by Carroll (1988), Frank and Ramus (1996).
