Taxonomy
Melanosaurus was named by Gilmore (1928). It is not extant. Its type is Melanosaurus maximus. It is the type genus of Melanosaurinae.
It was assigned to Melanosaurinae by McDowell and Bogert (1954), Kuhn (1966); to Melanosaurini by Estes (1983); to Glyptosaurinae by Sullivan (1986); and to Anguidae by Gilmore (1928), Hay (1930), McGrew et al. (1959), Carroll (1988).
